Losing weight is not equal to losing kilograms: how and why to measure the circumference of the waist and buttocks

Many of us weigh ourselves daily and record our weight or recalculate our BMI, or body mass index. However, both of these values usually do not play such a significant role in weight loss.

You may have noticed that in the application you can record not only the progress in losing weight, but also the circumference of the neck, arms, buttocks, abdomen, height, weight, waist circumference, upper and lower chest circumference, hip circumference, forearms ( all in cm), visceral fat, muscle, fat and water (in% in turn).

How to correctly and most importantly why to measure the waist circumference

For many, this is a difficult question. Where is my waist and how can I find it? You need to know that the waist is located between the top of the hipbone and the last lower bone of the ribcage. But this is a rather complicated definition. It can be easier – usually the waist is measured just above the navel. When we put our hands on our hips, we usually put them on the narrowest part of the body, and this is where we measure the waist.

  • It is measured with a calm (one might say, normal) exhalation, the stomach is not drawn in, we measure it on a naked body. If you measure clothes, you will not learn much. Use a standard tape measure (sometimes called a sewing tape) to measure. Make sure that the centimeter does not choke you and does not restrict you in natural movements.

Ideal values are 80 cm for women and 94 cm for men. In women, unhealthy values exceed 88 cm, in men it is more than 102 cm – such values indicate excess weight, fat accumulates in the abdominal cavity, which is called visceral fat.

How to measure the circumference of the buttocks

The buttocks are measured around their widest point … the buttocks. That is, around the hip joints and through the most convex part of the priests. We measure while standing with our feet together. The measurement of the circumference of the buttocks is used to calculate the so-called WHR and WHtR indices. There are various formulas for this, which you can find on the Internet, for example using web-based calculators. It is important for you to know only one thing – if you want to be healthy, your belly should always be smaller than your buttocks.

Visceral fat

Visceral fat is, in simple terms, fat that is found in the abdomen. This fat is harmful to you because it coats your internal organs. Its value may increase, although otherwise your weight will remain at the same level, or you may even lose a little weight. It also happens that the percentage of body fat does not change.

  • With age, visceral fat begins to accumulate more and more, in women often after menopause. We measure it using your waist circumference.

The number of centimeters shows how much visceral fat has accumulated in the body. The more centimeters around your waist and therefore fat, the higher your risk of blood pressure, diabetes, vascular problems, the risk of stroke, arthritis, dementia, etc. There are also special scales for measuring visceral fat.

How to measure body fat and water

Subcutaneous fat is not as dangerous as visceral fat. He, of course, does not look beautiful at all, but does not put pressure on the internal organs and does not directly affect the vessels. This, of course, does not mean that subcutaneous fat is in any way beneficial for the body.

The problem is that even the best scales won’t tell you how much subcutaneous fat you have on your belly, but how much visceral fat you have. Probably the most accurate way is computed tomography, but we don’t do this procedure all the time, right? Thus, the most common method is to buy a smart scale. In addition to actual weight, they also measure body fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle mass including visceral fat, bone mass, basal metabolic rate, or metabolic age.

  • Some of the cheapest scales can cost an average of $ 80 – $ 100. If you do not feel like buying such a scale, you can periodically use a scale found in fitness clubs, where they are usually available.

How and when is the best time to be weighed and measured?

For the correct measurement of the waist and buttocks, it is important that measurements are always taken at the same places on the body. If, for example, you started measuring yourself at the widest part of your abdomen, continue to measure that way. Take measurements once a week. If you switch to a healthier diet and start moving more, you will see more impressive results after a week than if you weigh yourself every day.

Always use the same centimeter and the same scale for a more accurate reading. Always install the balance in the same place. Everyone knows that on the tile the scales show one thing, but on the linoleum it is completely different.

And remember, it’s scientifically proven that stress negatively affects weight loss. If you experience stress every day because of every centimeter or gram, this will not help you, but will only make the process of losing weight more difficult.
